Srinagar, is the capital of the northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir that is situated in India. It is situated in Kashmir Valley and lies on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus. The city is famous for its lakes and houseboats. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. It is also the headquarters of Srinagar district.
Tourism is the most significant segment of the city's economy. The city of Srinagar is a gateway to some of the most scenic and beautiful places of the Indian subcontinent. The beautiful and world famous hill station and skiing resort Gulmarg is just 50 km from the city. For decades, tourism has been contributing massively to the economy of the city
Mughal Gardens ( Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chasmesahi ) : Wide spread green lawns with beautiful fountains, amazing multi colour flowers , Mughal garden’s are one of the most visited sites of Srinagar. Mughal Garden are a combination of Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chasmasahi. Spring Season is the best time to visit Mughal Gardens to see the beauty of flowers.
Hazratbal Mosque : A beautiful Muslim Shrine located at the bank of Dal Lake in Srinagar is believed to have a Sacred hair of Prophet Muhammad. This sacred shrine is visited by not only Muslims but many people from other religion from all over the world.
Shankaracharya Temple : Located on a hillock facing Srinagar town and Dal Lake, this temple was known to be constructed on 200 BC. The temple is dedicated to Hindu God Mahadev. The name of this temple was associated after the visit of Adishankaracharya . The temple is also sacred for Buddhists and is called as Pas Pahar in Buddhism.
Dal Lake : Located in Srinagar, this lake is the main attraction for tourist visiting Srinagar. The Shore line of this lake is around 15.5 Kms. Shikara ride is offered to explore the lake which have a floating market and a floating garden. Various houseboats are located within the lake which offers a panoramic view of lake to the tourist staying at houseboats.
Train to Jammu followed by a taxi or bus ride to Srinagar.
Srinagar is the main airport which is connected by all domestic carrier such as Indigo, Go Air, Air India, Kingfisher, Jet Airways, Jet Lite and Spice Jet. Direct flights are available from delhi and mumbai and connecting flights from Leh Chandigarh, and Jammu.
J&K SRTC operates fairly comfortable buses from Jammu, Taxis are also available from Jammu. The journey from Jammu to Srinagar in costlier in the summers because capital is being shifted from Jammu to Srinagar on both the state buses and Sumos. State buses are safer but take more time and are a bit uncomfortable.
