Pahalgam, is situated at an altitude of 2,133 metres amidst lofty deodars, fir, pine, junipers and many other conifers. The place gets lively during the tourist months of the summer, as well as during the weeks before the Amarnath Yatra, as the base for a big annual pilgrimage to a cave of an ‘ice-lingam’. The town is at the junction of the Aru and Sheshnag Rivers and surrounded by soaring, fir-covered mountains with bare, snow-capped peaks rising behind them.
The Aru flows down from the Kolahoi glacier beyond Lidderwat while the Sheshnag from glaciers along the great Himalayas. At the confluence of the streams flowing from the river Lidder and Sheshnag Lake, Pahalgam was once a humble shepherd's village with breathtaking views. Now it Kashmir's premier resort, cool even during the height of summer.
Chandanwari : is the place from where the famous Amarnath yatra starts. Situated around 16 km from Pahalgam, Chandanwari is around 30 km away from Amarnath Cave, the abode of Lord Shiva. The yatra is undertaken every year in the month of Sawan (rain) when a Shiva linga gets naturally formed inside the cave. The way to Chandanwari is the main highlight of the place. It is really a wonderful journey. The road is covered with pine trees on both sides and there is a stream as well in between.
Mamaleshwara : is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was built in 12th century during the rule of King Jayasima, if not earlier. It is only a km away from Pahalgam. This stone temple witnesses a large number of locales coming to offer their prayers.
Tulian Lake : Situated at an altitude of 3353 m above sea level, Tulian Lake remains frozen for most of the year. The lake is surrounded by mountains from all four sides and reaching to this lake turns out to be great adventure. One can also hire ponies to come to Tulian Lake.
Aru Valley :Situated at an altitude of 2408 m, Aru is a small area full of ravishing grasslands and a small self-sufficient village. This resplendent meadow also has Lidder River with icy cold water at one side.
The nearest railhead to Pahalgam is at Jammu from where it takes an approximate time of around 4 hours to reach Pahalgam.
Srinagar is the nearest airport which is connected by all domestic carrier such as Indigo, Go Air, Air India, Kingfisher, Jet Airways, Jet Lite and Spice Jet.
Pahalgam is well-connected to a number of other regions of Jammu and Kashmir. There are a number of well maintained roads which lead to Pahalgam.
